As of March 2025, Bangladesh has officially recognized a total of 51 Geographical Indication (GI) products, certified by the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industries. Following the standards set by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Bangladesh passed the GI Products (Registration and Protection) Act in 2013 and implemented GI Rules in 2015.
What Are GI Products and Why Do They Matter?
Geographical Indication (GI) tags are a form of intellectual property that signify a product’s origin and the quality, reputation, or unique characteristics attributed to that location. GI status helps protect traditional knowledge and enhances branding for local industries. For Bangladesh, these products are part of cultural heritage and contribute to both local economy and global recognition.
